building the bird

Client: Myles Belland

Context:

For this project I treated myself as the client. The challenge was to create a cinema veritรฉ style documentary, where as the filmmaker you are only an observer and arenโ€™t able to interact with the participants. This style is focused on recording events as they are and then aiming to draw away the presence of the camera and present a more objective truth.

With one day of filming pre-event, and one day of filming at the event (and only one camera) this was a strong test of all of our filmmaking skills over the last 12 years. Thereโ€™s an art to weaving the right visuals the audience needs to see, with sound design that gives the right cues, and building sequencing in a way that tells a story.

Goal: Create a Cinema Veritรฉ documentary that tells a compelling story without interacting with the participants.

Budget: Under $10,000 per video
