My favourite photography shutter speed is 1/125

You’re probably thinking to yourself, “Myles, how can you have a favourite shutter speed? Don’t they change depending on the scenario you’re in?”

That’s where you’re wrong!

Favourite shutter speeds are like using a familiar mug for a cup of chai tea on a cool rainy spring day. It’s like kicking a brand new soccer ball on a freshly cut lawn. It’s like unsheathing your trusty hammer that was given to you by your father after he taught you carpentry. It’s like… okay we get the picture Myles.

For real, there are certain settings that I much prefer to use because they are trusty tools in my toolbelt.

1/125 is one of those shutter speed that I keep coming back to because it fits so many situations well. For wide angles it can easily keep everything sharp. It covers the 50mm - 85mm focal range no problem, especially if your lenses don’t have image stabilization. And if you can manage your breath, lean up on a railing or wall, or use a monopod, you can snipe telephotos lenses at 200mm still at 1/125 (especially with an image stabilized lens).

What I’m trying to say here is that 1/125 is a utility shutterspeed. You can fall back on it in most normal situations and 90% of the time your images will be sharp.

Here’s some images that have been shot at 1/125:

Stop shooting with those other silly shutter speeds and come play with the best. You’ll makin magic every time. 😉
